Homes for Sale in Sheep Ranch CA

What is it like to live in Sheep Ranch CA?

With fewer than 100 residents, Sheep Ranch is one of the most remote and sparsely populated areas in Calaveras County. Sheep Ranch is ideal for those seeking privacy, solitude, and a simpler way of life. Some residents rely on off-grid solutions like solar power or well water.

Homes are a mix of older, rustic homes and ranch-style properties, often on large plots of land. Deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of bird species are common sights. Housing is affordable, but limited inventory can make finding a home challenging.

For basic necessities, Sheep Ranch itself has no major stores or commercial centers. Residents travel to Murphys, Angels Camp, or San Andreas for shopping, dining, and healthcare.

Sheep Ranch history

The town was once surrounded by sheep corrals, and in 1860 gold ore was discovered where the sheep were kept at night. Soon Sheep Ranch was a bustling gold mining town, and before the turn of the century, there were five flourishing gold mines. The Eagle Hotel and the Pioneer Hotel were the two prominent local establishments, and the town also supported 15 saloons. Only the Pioneer Hotel is still standing from that era. Picture shown is the hotel in the 1960s.

Much of the Clint Eastwood’ movie, “Honkytonk Man” was filmed in and around Calaveras County. Sheep Ranch was used for main street exterior scenes, as well as the Pioneer Hotel. Extras were locally hired and many of the town’s residents are seen in the movie.
